A library card is one of the most useful things to arrange during your first week in Vancouver. It can support English practice, a job search and simply finding a quiet place to work.
What the card can unlock
Along with books, magazines and DVDs, VPL offers ebooks, audiobooks, films, music, online courses and other Digital Library resources. Access varies by card type and place of residence.
For a job search, the library can also be a calm place to use internet resources and refine an application. Start with one Digital Library tool you need now rather than trying everything at once.
Applying as a Vancouver resident
Bring the required original identification and proof of address to a VPL branch. If you do not yet have Canadian-issued ID, you may still qualify with proof of address and a Canadian visa or work permit issued for six months or more.
If the paperwork is unclear, speak with staff instead of giving up. VPL notes that it can discuss different card options with you.

Temporary Digital Card
If you need digital material before visiting a branch, register online for a Temporary Digital Card. Its access and validity may differ from a full card, so convert it later if you plan to keep using VPL.
Store the number and PIN securely and do not share them. Licensed databases are for the individual cardholder.
Living outside the City of Vancouver
Addresses in Burnaby, Richmond, Surrey and other municipalities may follow different free-card or reciprocal-borrowing rules. A good first step is to get the card from your home municipality, then ask what VPL access it provides.
A paid Subscription card exists for some people within commuting distance, but it has restrictions, including some home digital access. Check the details before paying.
Three easy first uses
Listen to an English audiobook at a slower speed, read a magazine from the industry you want to enter, or review a résumé at a quiet desk. All three are easy ways to make the card useful immediately.
Providers change over time, so browse by purpose from VPL’s current Digital Library rather than searching for an old app name. Staff can also point you toward English-learning or job-search resources.
